Invisalign in West Allis: How Clear Aligners Work and Who They're Right For

A lot of our patients come in asking about Invisalign โ€” sometimes they've seen an ad, sometimes a coworker mentioned it, and sometimes they've just spent years thinking about straightening their teeth and finally decided to ask. We love these conversations, because clear aligner treatment has genuinely changed what's possible for adults and older teens who want straighter teeth without the brackets-and-wire experience they remember from childhood.

How Invisalign Actually Works โ€” Not the Marketing Version

Here's what Invisalign really is: a series of custom-made plastic trays, called aligners, that you wear over your teeth. Each tray is slightly different from the last, and as you move through the series โ€” typically switching to a new tray every one to two weeks โ€” your teeth gradually shift into the position we've planned together. The aligners are made from a smooth, BPA-free thermoplastic material and are designed to fit snugly over your teeth. They're not invisible in the way a contact lens is invisible, but they're close. In normal conversation and in photos, most people won't notice them at all.

The process starts with a detailed scan of your teeth โ€” we use digital impressions, so no goopy molds. That scan gets sent to Invisalign's lab, where a treatment simulation is built. We review that plan carefully before anything is approved, because the outcome depends heavily on how well that initial roadmap is designed. Once your aligners arrive, you wear them 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth. That last part is one of the biggest practical advantages: your oral hygiene routine stays almost exactly the same. No threading floss under wires, no avoiding popcorn at the movies.

Depending on the complexity of your case, treatment can take anywhere from six months to about two years. We check in with patients every six to eight weeks to make sure things are tracking the way they should. If something needs a small adjustment, Invisalign's refinement process lets us order additional aligners to fine-tune the result.

Who Is โ€” and Isn't โ€” a Good Candidate

This is where we want to be honest with you, because not every dental office will be. Invisalign works very well for a wide range of alignment issues: crowding, spacing, mild to moderate overbites and underbites, crossbites, and open bites. If your teeth are mildly or moderately misaligned, there's a good chance you're a strong candidate. We've treated a lot of patients from across the West Allis and Milwaukee area โ€” people who drove over from Wauwatosa, folks who've lived on the south side their whole lives โ€” and the majority of adults who come in curious about clear aligners turn out to be good fits.

That said, there are situations where traditional braces are still the better tool. Severe skeletal issues โ€” cases where the jaw itself needs significant repositioning โ€” often require orthodontic treatment that aligners can't fully accomplish on their own. Very complex rotations of certain teeth, particularly canines and premolars, can also be difficult to achieve with aligners alone. We'll always tell you if we think another approach would serve you better. Our goal isn't to sell you on a specific product; it's to help you get a result you'll actually be happy with.

One thing we see fairly often: patients who have old dental work โ€” crowns, bridges, missing teeth โ€” and wonder if that disqualifies them. It doesn't automatically, but it does affect planning. We factor all of that in during the consultation. Age is rarely a barrier for adults. We've started Invisalign treatment with patients well into their 50s and 60s who simply never had the chance to address crowding when they were younger, and they've done beautifully.

A Real Example From Our Practice

We had a patient a couple of years ago โ€” a woman in her early 40s who works in healthcare and had been self-conscious about her smile for most of her adult life. Her front teeth were noticeably crowded, and she'd always assumed that fixing them meant metal braces, which felt like something she couldn't do professionally. She came in for a routine cleaning, mentioned it almost offhandedly, and we ended up talking through Invisalign as an option.

She was skeptical at first โ€” mostly about whether she'd actually wear the trays consistently. That's a real concern and we don't dismiss it. Compliance matters with Invisalign in a way it doesn't with braces, which are fixed in place. But she was motivated, and we talked practically about how to build the habit: keeping a case with her at all times, setting a phone reminder to put them back in after lunch. Fourteen months later, her case was complete. The crowding was resolved, her bite was better than it had been, and she told us at her next cleaning that she finally felt comfortable smiling in pictures. That's the kind of outcome that makes this work meaningful for us.

We share that story not to make promises โ€” every case is different โ€” but because it reflects something we see regularly. Adults who've carried a concern about their smile for years often assume it's too late or too complicated. Usually, it's neither.

What to Expect If You Come See Us on S 60th St

If you're thinking about Invisalign in the West Allis area, the first step is just a conversation. We don't pressure anyone into treatment, and we don't believe in high-pressure consultations. You'll sit down with one of our doctors โ€” Dr. Wong, Dr. Park, or Dr. Xiao โ€” and we'll take a look at your teeth, talk through what's bothering you, and give you an honest assessment of what Invisalign could accomplish and what it would cost. Dr. Park also sees patients in Korean if that's helpful for you or a family member.

Cost is something people are often nervous to bring up, but please don't be. Invisalign treatment at our practice is priced competitively, and we work with most major dental insurance plans โ€” many of which include an orthodontic benefit that applies to Invisalign just as it would to traditional braces. We also offer flexible financing options for patients who want to spread payments out over time. We've been part of this community since 1946, and we've always tried to make good dental care accessible to the families who trust us with their health.

If you've been thinking about straightening your teeth and want a straight answer about whether Invisalign is right for you, we'd love to talk. Give Gentle Smiles Dentistry a call at (414) 545-6747 to schedule a consultation, or stop by and see us at 1947 S 60th St in West Allis. We're here when you're ready.
